The Next Car - car selling and buying advice

Where to sell your car

Word of Mouth
Word of mouth can be the most effective way to sell a car. Just let your circle of friends and family know you're selling your car and how much you want.

Don't go too cheap on the price...if one of your friends or family members buys it, chances are you'll end up helping them with it later if they have problems.

Specialty Vehicles
If it's a rare collectible, high-end luxury or high-performance sports car, you ought to list in specialty publications such as the Dupont Registry or eBay Motors.

CraigsList
Regular cars and trucks should first be listed on Craig's list. Posting items for sale on craigslist.org is free and you can "anonymize" your email address so you don't expose yourself to spam and other scams. Most major cities have a local Craig's list. The default city is San Francisco...just click on the closest city to you in the table on the right column of the homepage.

LiveDeal
Another free listing site that hosts local classifieds is LiveDeal. You can take a look at local LiveDeal listings from the Seattle area here. LiveDeal is a relatively new player but backed by some of the brightest minds that started eBay.

Newspaper Classified Listings
Newspaper classified listings have always been the "tried and true" way to sell a used car. The problem with newspapers is that readership is down in most major markets, so less and less people will see your ad. In the Seattle market, the Seattle Times currently charges around $37 for 3 lines for 7 days. You also get your vehicle listed on the web with 4 photos. For $85 you get 3 lines of text for 2 weeks including 4 photos.

eBay Motors
Unless you have a lot of experience buying and selling high dollar value items on eBay, we don't recommend it.  There is too much fraud that goes unreported, especially against sellers.  If you decide to use eBay Motors, please read this description of common fraud techniques used on eBay published by Jeff Ostroff of Car Buying Tips .
